Counselor
Mrs. Yasamien Kirby is the school counselor at TCES and has been part of the Town Creek family for 5 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and her Master of Education degree in School Counseling from Frostburg State University.
As the school counselor, Mrs. Kirby supports all of the students at TCES from Pre-K to 5th grade. The school counseling program at TCES includes guidance lessons in all classes bi-weekly. In Pre-K and Kindergarten lessons focus on friendship, identifying feelings, self-esteem, and social skills. Lessons in grades 2-3 focus on the 6 pillars of character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, Trustworthiness, and Citizenship. Lessons in grades 3-5 utilize the Steps to Respect curriculum, focusing on bullying prevention with an emphasis on empathy and conflict resolution. All students will be exposed to career exploration through classroom lessons and a Career Day in the spring.
In addition, students may have the opportunity to work in small groups during lunch (lunch bunch) on a variety of topics including friendship, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and flexible thinking. Mrs. Kirby is also available to meet with students individually for short-term counseling.
Mrs. Kirby works closely with the staff to help TCES students be the best that they can be!
Elementary School Counseling Services
The school counseling program at Town Creek Elementary School is designed to assist students in decision-making and to help each child appreciate their self-worth. Teachers, families, or students may make referrals for specific problems to the school counselor. The school counselor meets with new students entering our school to welcome and orient them to the school’s expectations and culture and helps coordinate our fifth graders’ transition to middle school.
